About the Central Florida Society of Optometric Physicians (CFSOP)
Our non-profit organization was incorporated in 1981 to fulfill numerous needs in our profession and our community. Optometry is a profession that has seen sizable expansion in its scope and numbers over the last few decades. The modern optometrist is responsible for more than the patient’s visual needs. He or she must examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as search for related systemic conditions.
An optometrist or Optometric Physician studies for the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree for four years after college. Many go onto special programs or residencies beyond the basic degree. Each state requires every optometrist to take a comprehensive written and practical examination before they are allowed to practice. The states also legislates what procedures and medications OD’s can do and prescribe. In Florida optometrists can prescribe just about all-topical eye medications including those for glaucoma.
